Participating Railroads and Shipping Lines

1. Railroad

 

Eurailpasses are valid for unlimited travel in the class indictated on the pass (lst class tickets are also valid in 2nd class) in the trains of national railroads and of some private rail lines of the following countries:

   

Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

 

With a first class pass you can also travel in second class.

In Finland a supplement has to be paid for the use of the InterCity Plus. This supplement includes a seat reservation and a snack or breakfast.

In Norway additional fees are required for special services on the Flåm-line during the summer season and for the use of the 'Bureau-car' in the ICE-trains and the 'Salon-car' in the new express trains (meal included). Note that the new-express trains in Norway do not offer 1st class coaches. 1st class ticketholders are welcome to travel in the upgraded 'standard'-coach (free coffee/tea included) without supplement.

Special Conditions

Your pass does not guarantee a seat on the train. When you plan to travel long distances you should make reservations in advance. On some trains it is even compulsory. Reservations are als compulsory for overnight sleeping facilities. Special trains such as EC, IC, TGV (French high speed train), X2000 (Swedish high speed train), Bernina Express, Panoramic Express, etc.are included in your pass. Seat reservation often is compulsory (please inquire in advance) and is not free of charge.

  • High speed trains
    Usually additional fees are required for the use of high speed trains such as ICE (Germany), AVE and Talgo (Spain), Pendolino and ETR 500 (Italy), Pendolino S220 (Finland) ETR/Cisalpino (Switzerland/Italy), Thalys (France/Belgium/Netherlands). These fees include extra services on board. A seat reservation is compulsory. Please inquire in advance.
  • Night Trains
    When planning to use an overnight train you have to make a reservation in advance for a sleeper or a couchette and pay a supplement. For the use of hoteltrains, such as InterCityNight (Germany), CityNightLine (Austria, Germany, Switzerland), EuroNight, hoteltrains in Spain etc. additional charges are required. These additional charges include overnight accomidation, breakfast, other services on board. Reservation is compulsory. Please inquire in advance as there are many different kinds of accomidation and fees may differ considerably.

2. Shipping lines

Eurailpasses are also valid on the shipping lines operated by:

  • Adriatica di Navigazione and Hellenic Mediterranean between Italy and Greece (Brindisi - Corfu/Igoumenitsa/ Patras or vice versa). However, from June 10 to September 30 inclusive, a US $ 15 high season surcharge must be paid. During July and August, advanced reservation is recommended. Reservation fee: US $ 3 (all year). Special accommodations (airline-type-seats or cabins) as well as port taxes are extra. Before boarding, all passengers must check in at the shipping line pier office. Passengers willing to stop over at Corfu or Igoumenitsa must say so upon delivery of the steamer ticket.
  • Silja Line between Finland and Sweden. Advance reservation is recommended in June - August.
    • Stockholm - Mariehamn - Turku or vice versa. Eurailpass holders get free passage on day sailings but pay for cabin space.
    • Stockholm - Helsinki or vice versa. Eurailpass holders pay for cabin space.
    • Umeå - Vaasa or vice versa. Eurailpass holders pay for cabin space.
3. Bonuses

 

Bear in mind that in addition to rail travel, Eurailpass, Eurail Saverpass, Eurail Saver Flexipass, Eurail Flexipass, Eurail Youthpass and Eurail Youth Flexipass entitles you to many bonuses, such as transportation by ferries, steamers and buses either entirely free or at a discount.

 

As a rule, these must be obtained locally and only the companies listed below will honor your pass. Others may provide identical services, but you will not get a special fare, so read the instructions thoroughly and check carefully before committing yourself. The following bonuses are granted for 1998:

 

Flexipass and Saver Flexipass holders please note: Use of a free transportation bonus requires use of a travel day. Use of a reduction bonus does not require use of a travel day.

Denmark

  • Ferry crossings Rødby Faerge to Puttgarden (Germany).
  • Ferry crossings Helsingør and Helsingborg (Sweden).
  • Ferry crossings Århus to Kalundborg.

Finland

  • Buses, particularly those which operate during certain hours of the day as train substitute.

Germany

  • Ferry crossings Puttgarden to Rødby Faerge (Denmark) and Sassnitz to Trelleborg (Sweden).
  • Boats operated by the 'KD German Rhine Line' making regular runs on the Rhine between Cologne and Mainz and on the Mosel between Koblenz and Cochem (except on boats making cruises of several days between Basel and Rotterdam or vice versa, or between Trier and Koblenz or vice versa). An extra charge will have to be paid for the use of hydrofoils.

Italy

  • Ferry crossings Civitavecchia to Golfo Aranci (Sardinia) and Villa S. Giovanni to Messina (Sicily).

Sweden

  • Ferry crossings between Helsingborg and Helsingör (Denmark).
  • Ferry crossing from Trelleborg to Sassnitz (Germany).

Switzerland

  • Regular boat service on the lakes of Geneva, Lucerne, Thun, Brienz, Zurich, Neuchatel, Biel, Murten, on the Rhine between Schaffhausen and Kreuzlingen and on the Aare between Biel and Solothurn. These are seasonal services, so please consult timetables.

  • Eurostar high speed train
    Links Paris to London in 3 hours and London to Brussels in 2 hours and 40 minutes via the Channel Tunnel. Eurostar also serves Lille and Calais in Northern France and Ashford, Kent. Eurostar offers a discount fare in 1st and 2nd class to Eurailpass holders. The Pass has to be validated before the trip on the Eurostar. Pass holders Fare in 1st class is also accessible with a Eurail Youthpass. Bookings can be made in Great Britain, France, Belgium or via any Eurostar Sales Outlet.
  • Hertz Rent-a-Car
    Has an attractive offer for holders of a Eurailpass or Eurailticket of 26 years and older. Eurail in conjunction with Hertz Europe offers a special rate. The rates include unlimited mileage, collision damage waiver and local taxes. To state that you are a Eurailpass- or Eurailticket holder quote Hertz CDP N 814333 and rate code "FTR" at the time of the reservation and rental. The car can be reserved through a Hertz Reservation Center in Europe or directly at the nearest Hertz Office.

Austria

  • 10% reductionon the Puchberg am Schneeberg - Hochschneeberg rack railway.
  • 15% reduction on the St. Wolfgang - Schafbergspitze rack railway.
  • 20% reduction on boats operated from May to October by Austrian Railways on Lake Wolfgang.
  • 50% reduction on boats operated from May to October by Austrian Railways on Lake Constance.

France

  • P&O European Ferries offers the following discounts to foot-passengers: 30% reduction on normal fares for the ferry crossing Calais - Dover (England) 30% reduction on norma fares for the ferry crossing Le Havre/Cherbourg - Portsmouth (England).
  • SeaFrance offers 50% reduction to Eurailpass holders on normal fares on ferry crossing Calais - Dover (England)
  • Irish Ferries offer 50% reduction to Eurailpass holders on the standard foot passenger fares on ferry crossing from Cherbourg and Roscoff to Rosslare (Ireland). Advance booking is recommended as capacity is limited. Sailings operate from April to September.
  • 50% reduction between Digne - Nice or vice versa on the Chemins de Fer de la Provence.

Germany

  • 50% reduction on normal fares for the ferry crossing Travemünde to Trelleborg (Sweden) on the 'TT-Line'.

  • Irish Ferries offer 50% reduction to Eurailpass holders on the standard foot passenger fares on ferry crossing from Rosslare to Cherbourg and Roscoff (France). Advance booking is recommended as capacity is limited. Sailings operate from April to September.
  • Bus Eireann offers Eurailpass holders a reduction on the price of their 3-day Rover ticket which covers bus services operated by Bus Eireann, Expressway and Provicial Services within the Republic of Ireland and on the City Services in Cork, Limerick, Galway, and Waterford. The reduced fare is lR £ 25. The ticket is valid for 3 days travel within 8 days.

Netherlands

  • 30% reduction on the full fare of the 'Stena Line' for the high speed sea service crossing Hoek van Holland - Harwich (England).

Norway

  • 30% reduction on the normal fares onday crossing of the 'Color Line' between Kristiansand and Hirthals (Denmark), Moss and Hirthals (Denmark), Moss and Frederikshavn (Denmark), Larvik and Frederikshavn (Denmark) and between Larvik and Skagen (Denmark).
  • 50% reduction on the normal fares of 'Scandinavian Seaways' between Oslo and Copenhagen (Denmark).
  • 50% reduction on the normal fare for the ferries of Flaggruten ANS: Bergen - Haugesund - Stavanger.
  • 50% reduction for Eurailpass holders on the ferries of 'Stena Line' between Oslo and Frederikshavn (Denmark). No discount on cabin and couchette supplements.

Spain

  • 20% reduction on the ferry crossings operated by 'Trasmediterranea' between Barcelona -Palma de Mallorca, Valencia - Palma de Mallorca.

Sweden

  • 25% reduction for Eurailpass holders on the hydrofoil of the 'Flyvebådene Company' between Malmö and Copenhagen (Denmark).
